There are many different ways to get around the islands. You can hire your own car, scooter or bicycle, catch a bus and have transfers between the airport and your accommodation.
We can help you explore the outer islands surrounding Rarotonga via local flights – we recommend you do so as each island is very different to the next!
Travel is a breeze around Rarotonga, which is 32 kilometers around. There are two main roads on Rarotonga, the Ara Tapu sealed road, through the villages and past the beaches, and the older inland road, the Ara Metua, which winds through fields of taro, pawpaw, bananas and local farmlands.
The ‘Island Bus’ offers a convenient low cost method of transport, operating regular schedules around the island (in both directions). It will pick you up and set you down anywhere you ask them to.
Driving is on the left hand side of the road. Full Overseas licenses are accepted in the Cook Islands, you will be allowed to drive only the class of motor vehicle you are entitled to drive in your home country.
If you would like to drive a vehicle not covered by your licence, such as a motor cycle, then you will need to obtain a Visitors License. This includes all car drivers on probationary or learners licenses. Helmets are compulsory for all non-residents of the Cook Islands, and for 16-25 year old residents travelling on a motorcycle- driver and passenger.
To obtain a Visitors License, you must first pass a Theory Test the cost of which is NZD$10.00. Once a drivers passes the Theory, they are able to move on to the Practical Test which costs NZD$10.00. The actual license is a further NZD$20.00 bringing the total cost to NZD$40.00.
