There are many different ways to get around the islands. You can hire your own car, scooter or bicycle, catch a bus and have transfers between the airport and your accommodation.
We can help you explore the outer islands surrounding Rarotonga via local flights – we recommend you do so as each island is very different to the next!
Travel is a breeze around Rarotonga, which is 32 kilometers around. There are two main roads on Rarotonga, the Ara Tapu sealed road, through the villages and past the beaches, and the older inland road, the Ara Metua, which winds through fields of taro, pawpaw, bananas and local farmlands.
The ‘Island Bus’ offers a convenient low cost method of transport, operating regular schedules around the island (in both directions). It will pick you up and set you down anywhere you ask them to.
Driving is on the left hand side of the road. A recent law change means you can drive in the country for up to six months using your current overseas licence unless the licence expires, is revoked, suspended or disqualified in that time. You will be allowed to drive only the class of motor vehicle you are entitled to drive in your home country.
If you would like to drive a vehicle not covered by your licence, such as a motor cycle, then you will need to undergo the Cook Islands driving licence testing system. Motorcycle testing fees cost NZ$70 for the theoretical and practice tests and $20 for the issue of the visitors licence, any person riding a motorcycle on an overseas motorcycle license or on a Cook Islands visitors license are required to wear a helmet.
The best way to get to and from the airport and your accommodation is via a Raro Tours Transfer. Raro Tours is the most extensive and well-equipped transportation company in the Cooks.
